Alpine route planning scene in the Fann Mountains

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about trekking in the Fann Mountains.

General

The best time for trekking in the Fann Mountains is from mid-June to mid-September. July and August offer the warmest weather and clearest trails, though some high passes may still have snow in early June.
Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa online through the Tajikistan e-visa portal. The process typically takes 2-3 business days. Some nationalities can receive a visa on arrival at Dushanbe airport.

Fitness

Fitness requirements depend on the trek. Day hikes around lakes require basic fitness. Multi-day treks with pass crossings above 4,000m require good cardiovascular fitness and prior hiking experience. We recommend starting a training program at least 2 months before your trip.

Equipment

We provide tents, cooking equipment, and meals. You should bring sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, a warm sleeping bag (comfort rating -5°C), rain gear, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a headlamp. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking.

Safety

The Fann Mountains are generally safe for trekking. Our guides are certified and experienced with the local terrain. We carry first-aid kits and satellite communication devices on all treks. Travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is mandatory.

Logistics

Most treks start from Panjakent or Artuch. You can fly into Dushanbe and take a 4-5 hour drive, or fly into Samarkand (Uzbekistan) and cross the border at Panjakent (about 1 hour). We arrange all transfers from both cities.

Accommodation

Depending on the tour, accommodation ranges from comfortable guesthouses and homestays in villages to tent camps at higher elevations. All camping equipment is provided and set up by our support team.

Food

Our cooks prepare hearty meals featuring local Tajik cuisine — fresh bread, soups, plov (rice pilaf), grilled meat, salads, fruits, and tea. Vegetarian options are available upon request. We ensure plenty of food to fuel your trek.

Altitude

Most treks in the Fann Mountains range between 2,500m and 4,000m, with some passes reaching up to 4,400m. Our itineraries are designed with proper acclimatization days. Symptoms are usually mild, but our guides are trained to recognize and manage altitude-related issues.

Booking

Free cancellation up to 30 days before departure. Cancellations 15-29 days before departure receive a 50% refund. Cancellations less than 15 days before departure are non-refundable. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance.

Fann Mountains Trekking

Weather in the Fann Mountains is generally stable in summer but can change quickly. Days are usually warm and sunny, while evenings and nights can be cold, especially at higher altitudes. Rain or short thunderstorms are possible.
There are no permanent toilets on the trail. Simple outdoor (camp-style) toilets are used near campsites. Toilet paper should be brought personally.
Showers are not available during the trek. Basic washing is possible using water from mountain streams or lakes (cold water only). Guesthouses before and after the trek may have showers.
Mobile signal is limited. Weak signal may be available near Artuch and occasionally at higher points, but most of the trek is completely off-grid. No mobile internet is available in the mountains.

Northern Tajikistan Tour

Summer is warm in valleys and cooler in mountains. Sudden showers are possible, especially near Iskanderkul. Bring layers and a light rain jacket.
Hotels and guesthouses have toilets and showers. Near Iskanderkul Lake, only basic outdoor toilets are available and showers are not available.
Mobile signal and internet are good in cities (Dushanbe, Khujand, Penjikent). Coverage is limited in the Iskanderkul lakes region.

7 Lakes Tour

Yes! The 7 Lakes tour is one of our most family-friendly options. The walking is gentle, the lakes are beautiful, and kids love the homestay experience. We recommend it for children aged 5 and above.
Yes, swimming is possible in several of the lakes, especially Marguzor Lake (6th lake). However, the water is cold even in summer (around 10–15°C), so it is more of a refreshing dip than a long swim.
Accommodation is in local homestays or guesthouses near the 4th lake (Nofin). Rooms are simple but clean, with mattresses, blankets, and pillows provided. Meals are home-cooked by the host family. Bring a sleeping bag if you prefer your own bedding.
