Border & logistics

How the Border Crossing Works

Your Samarkand driver takes you to the Jartepa-Sarazm border. You cross on foot, and our Tajik-side driver and local team meet you after passport control. From there, you continue by private vehicle toward the Seven Lakes.

Coordinated handoff

Vehicles usually stay on their own side of the border, so we coordinate the timing between your Samarkand driver and the Tajik-side team.

Hotel pickup in Samarkand

Your driver meets you at your hotel and takes you toward the Jartepa-Sarazm border.

Help with timing and border coordination

We plan the pickup and handoff timing around the same-day route and border formalities.

Tajik-side driver meets you after the checkpoint

After passport control, the Tajik-side driver and local team meet you with the private vehicle.

Same-day return to Samarkand

After the lake stops and picnic lunch, the team coordinates your return through the same border route.

The lakes

Seven stops, each with its own character

Haft Kul is a string of lakes with changing colors, altitude, and atmosphere. The route works because each stop adds something different to the day.

1

Nejigon

A first stop with clear water and a relaxed introduction to the valley.

2

Soya

A still lake that reflects the surrounding slopes beautifully in the morning.

3

Khushyor

A deeper-toned lake with wider views opening up around the gorge.

4

Nofin

A quieter, higher point where the air feels cooler and the pace slows down.

5

Khurdak

A smaller lake set between the slopes, with a more tucked-away feel.

6

Marguzor

One of the most recognizable lakes on the route, with broad views and strong color.

7

Hazorchashma

The uppermost stop, framed by peaks and seasonal pastureland.

I could not recommend Navruz and his team enough. What a welcome to the beautiful country of Tajikistan! Ahead of our 5 day tour of the Fann Mountains, Navruz was full of helpful information and tips. Communication was easy and responses were detailed and speedy. He speaks excellent English and went above and beyond to make our group feel at ease and attended to. The tour was great value with the level of service clearly better than the other tours we saw in the mountains. As well as being an excellent mountain guide he offered fascinating insight into Tajikistan’s history, politics and culture. The tour itself was perfectly designed with just the right amount of challenge. When group members struggled Navruz was there to offer encouragement. Whilst being a total professional he was always fun and smiley. We felt safe at all times and he even helped us after the tour with onward travel to Dushanbe. Special mention to Navruz’s wonderful family and mother who cooked us a delicious final lunch in her home. If you want to see the Fann mountains, see them with Navruz!

We had a great time in seven lakes in Tajikistan. Communication with Navruz was very good, he answered all our questions before the tour and together we were able to customise the day to our wishes. On the excursion day in the early morning he confirmed us again that our driver and the giude will be waiting at the border and informed how to find them. The car was clean and specious and the driver was really good. The road was really hard - and the man knew what he was doing. Our guide was really lovely and spoke fluent English. We also had some easy but good meal (Tajjik soup and plov) at the third lake. I definitely recommend!

Excellent tour that went above and beyond all expectations. Was waiting at the border when we arrived and provided a really cool and personalized tour for us to Seven Lakes. Gave us all the time we wanted at the lakes to hike, explore, and take pictures. The lunch at the homestay at the 4th lake was a really great experience as well. Would absolutely recommend this guide and tour for anyone wanting to get a taste of Tajikistan!
